Does the word fogging conjure an image of smoke in your mind? 

 We are not surprised by your response. In India, citizens associate mosquito management with a smoky fog that the city administration or building maintenance crew carries out to tackle adult mosquitoes. 

 Space spraying (or fogging) involves dispersing small droplets of insecticide (less than 50 μm in diameter) into the air to kill the airborne mosquitoes. Space sprays can be either thermal or cold fogs.  In thermal fogging, equipment that runs on petroleum fuel generates a thermal or hot fog containing a pesticide lethal to mosquitoes.

 Fogging equipment that generates fog mixes the pesticide with a diesel carrier, creating thick white smoke.  In the twentieth century, thermal fogging was a popular choice in controlling mosquitoes by using smoke containing a pesticide.  Even today, thermal fogging is a popular choice in community-wide mosquito abatement strategies.  However, due to safety and environmental concerns, thermal fogging is slowly fading out of fashion and use.

Though thermal fogging helps by killing mosquitoes, it also creates pollution by using petroleum for running equipment and diesel for creating the fog. Furthermore, when thermal fogging is on in a place, the people in the vicinity breathe the fog, making health issues in sensitive people with respiratory problems. In addition, thick white thermal fogs reduce visibility, leading to accidents by vehicles or people due to poor visibility. Thermal fogs also alert indoor fire alarms.

As pesticide technology against mosquitoes evolved, leading manufacturers like Bayer developed formulations to overcome thermal fogging limitations while ensuring effective mosquito kill.  This article discusses cold fogging or applying a pesticide fog at normal temperature, unlike thermal fogging, which involves heating the pesticide before its application.

In contrast to thermal fogging, cold fogging machines achieve more effective chemical pesticides and savings on diesel and energy.  Aqua K-Othrine is an ultra-low volume (ULV) formulation whose extremely fine droplets (25-30µm) penetrate nooks and corners for extensive coverage of mosquito habitats in open areas.

PECOPP uses United Phosphorus Limited’s P2 ULV backpack sprayer, designed for malaria and dengue control by cold fogging.   P2 sprayer generates more than two-thirds of particles less than 30 µm with greater space spray effectiveness.

PECOPP sources Bayer’s Aqua K-Othrine for mosquito management services at Gurgaon, New Delhi, Ahmedabad, Pune, Nashik, Navi Mumbai, Thane, and Goa.  Unlike other products for managing mosquitoes that use petroleum products as a diluent, you can dilute Aqua K Othrine in water for indoor or outdoor application. 

Bayer’s patented Film-Forming Aqueous Spray Technology (FFAST) allows Aqua K-Othrine droplets to resist evaporation enabling them to stay in the air and kill mosquitoes for a longer period. In addition, Aqua K-Othrine has a very low application rate of one litre of solution in water for 1 hectare. Being free of diesel and smoke, Aqua K Othrine is inherently safer than other pesticides, has a low environmental impact, and has no fire hazards.

Starting in 2020, PECOPP has successfully provided cold fogging to the customers with mosquito management needs for the past two years.  Customers who received such service have appreciated the superior results of cold fogging, which does not create unpleasant surroundings for people.

As cold fogging uses water, the ultra-low volume application of Aqua K-Othrine makes the spray droplets so minute that they are almost invisible. As a result, PECOPP’s cold fogging is very useful in outdoor mosquito control sites because during and after its completion, it lets people safely go about their routine without discomfort or disturbance.

By partnering with Bayer, PECOPP has equipped its team in the science and the use of Aqua K-Othrine through classroom and field training. As a result, our technicians, officers, and managers have a thorough knowledge of mosquito management to provide relief to our customers and society from mosquito bites.

As mosquitoes are a community and city-wide problem, PECOPP recommends its customers plan integrated pest management (IPM) approach towards mosquitoes.  Elimination of mosquito breeding sites by avoiding or emptying water is the first and most critical step to minimizing adult mosquito populations.  Application of larvicides that kill mosquito larvae and using predatory larvivorous fishes also minimizes mosquito populations.

PECOPP also offers indoor residual sprays of long-lasting synthetic pyrethroid insecticides on walls and other indoor surfaces for mosquito management.  Most recently, PECOPP added AedesX Smart Gravitrap to its mosquito management tools to control Aedes mosquitoes. 

The AedesX Smart Gravitrap is a plastic trap with LED lights and a water reservoir that attracts female adult Aedes mosquitoes to lay eggs in it.  The trap’s automatic mechanism activates LEDs which repel Aedes larvae that emerge from the eggs through the trap’s funnel, forcing them to move into the kill zone where they die by asphyxiation.  PECOPP is proud to be one of the first users of the AedesX Smart Gravitrap that Singapore’s Pestroniks Innovations Pte. Ltd. and Asiatic Specialty Products jointly developed.

Homeowners and businesses can be certain of effective mosquito management by availing a complete package of services, each contributing to minimizing and eliminating adult mosquito populations. Unfortunately, the mere use of household insecticide sprays or insecticide aerosols at homes is ineffective as mosquitoes are a community-wide problem.
